The Maldive Islands
stretch from the south western tip of India to the
equator. This republic consists of 1,196 islands, in 26
distinct coral atolls which are spread over a total area of
90,000 square kilometres (about 36,000 square miles) of the
Indian Ocean, yet less than 0.5 percent of this is land.
Some 200 of the islands are inhabited.
Traders have
historically stopped on these islands, and so the Maldives
have long been exposed to cultures both East and West.
Ancient shipwrecks can still be seen along the sunny shores.
The Maldives became a fully
independent nation on July 26, 1965, and a Republic on
November 11, 1968.
Each island is surrounded
by a protective coral reef. These are home to a great
variety of tropical fish, inviting skin diving.
The islands are very small
and low-lying with many being no more than two meters above
sea level. Hence many of the resorts are built out over the
shallow waters, placing the visitor completely in touch with
the rich natural environment.
Each island resort has its
own flavor. Here are introductions to five of the
world-class resorts we visit. Others are also available, of
equal quality. Click here for
