Itinerary
Day One – Arrive in Charleston, South Carolina
Welcome to Charleston, widely regarded as one of the most
beautiful and historic cities in America; a place where
delightful southern breezes and cobblestone streets pave the
way to gracious living and warm hospitality. For those
arriving early, your Tour Manager will be available to offer
sightseeing and dining suggestions.
Day Two – Charleston
The morning begins with a guided tour of Charleston. History
comes alive as we walk along quaint cobblestone streets
lined with antebellum homes and hear the stories of those
who founded Charleston. See the Old Market and Exchange, and
visit the famous "Battery at the Harbor," which
overlooks Fort Sumter. It was here, in April of 1861, that
the first shot of the Civil War was fired. After lunch we
visit Magnolia Plantation, a beautifully maintained
plantation dating from the 1680s. Here we get a glimpse of
17th-century life on the Ashley River. This evening, your
Tour Manager will host a dinner cruise on Charleston harbor.
Enjoy a delicious meal as you cruise past the city's many
historic landmarks. (Breakfast and dinner)
Day Three – Charleston to Jekyll Island
After breakfast we depart for Jekyll Island, one of
Georgia's Golden Isles. Our first stop is Beaufort, a
charming southern town boasting numerous antebellum homes.
Late this afternoon we arrive at the Jekyll Island Club
Hotel, our home for the next two nights. This is where the
Rockefellers and Vanderbilts once "held court."
(Breakfast and dinner)
Day Four – Jekyll Island Touring and St. Simons
This morning we enjoy a narrated tram tour of the historic
district of Jekyll Island to hear the history and folklore
of those who have lived here. Then we journey to the largest
of the Golden Isles, St. Simons Island. Our tour of the
village includes Fort Fredrica National Monument, the
200-year-old lighthouse and the hauntingly beautiful Christ
Church. There is also some free time late this afternoon to
explore St. Simons on your own. This evening we enjoy dinner
in a historic building on St. Simons Island before returning
to our hotel. (Breakfast and dinner)
Day Five – Savannah
After breakfast, we travel to Savannah, the Belle of the
South. Discover why General Sherman found this city much too
beautiful to burn during the Civil War. A local guide tells
us the tales and secrets of the stately mansions as we drive
through the historic district. Keep a sharp eye out because
we also pass the home of Juliette Gordon Low, founder of the
Girl Scouts, the square where scenes from Forrest Gump were
filmed and see places made famous in Midnight in the Garden
of Good and Evil. The remainder of the day is free for you
to enjoy Savannah at your own pace. (Breakfast)
Day Six – Free Day in Savannah or Visit Hilton Head
Island
Today is free to explore the enchanting city of Savannah at
your own pace. Discover the many shops along River Street
and enjoy the beauty of the quaint squares perfect for
relaxing. For those who wish, a trip to Hilton Head Island
is available. Regarded as South Carolina's exquisite jewel,
Hilton Head has a fascinating early history, from its role
in the Civil War to its development into one of the premier
resort communities of the world. There is a visit to famous
Sea Pines Plantation and Harbour Town, with its many unique
shops, restaurants, picturesque harbor and landmark
lighthouse. This evening, join your fellow travelers for a
farewell dinner at one of Savannah's favorite restaurants,
The Lady & Sons. (Breakfast and dinner)
Day Seven – Savannah and Home
We bid a fond farewell to Savannah and our memorable
experience in Georgia's "Golden Isles."
